As we start a new session in school everything is immediately back to full speed.  Timetables and courses fixed for senior pupils.  Discussions take place with individual staff and pupils about exam results.  Some pupils are already planning Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions while others start organising a Triathlon for September in the Harbour area.

Settling the new S1 into school is also an important business and our senior pupil mentors play an important part in this process.  This summer we have also welcomed several new pupils into the school across S1 to S6 and we wish them all success in their time at Gairloch High School.

Exam Results – Once again our school pupils received an impressive set of exam results.  Statistically this is the best set of results we have had in several years from S4 pupils in particular.  In S5 we have several pupils who achieved 5 Highers with Dux Eildh Maclennan achieving the best results in the Higher category. Ex-S6 pupils Ian Paul and former Dux Fraser Hinchliff both did very well achieving 3 Advanced Higher certificates and an additional Higher.  Ian got A passes in all four subjects while Fraser got 3 A’s and a B.  6 pupils in total received a variety of Advanced Higher results.  The majority were passed at Grade A including Margaret Mathieson and Rachel MacKenzie in Gaelic (Learners).  We congratulate all pupils whose hard work has resulted in such good grades.  Meanwhile we do not rest on our laurels.  All exam results are scrutinised and areas where results are not as strong as we expect are investigated.

Senior Prefects 2013/2014 – Responsibilities of the House Prefects involve: house leadership and motivation of younger pupils, organising teams for sporting events; entertainments; to support and coordinate inter-house events and extra-curricular activities.

Kerry House – House Captains Laura Ridehalgh & Peter Banks. Assisted by Gemma McLean & Cameron Moys.

Maree House – House Captains Isla MacKenzie & Donald MacKenzie. Assisted by Dannie Bulmer & Chris Young.

Tollaidh House – House Captains Caitlin Johnston & Luke Gorman.  Assisted by Beth Townsend & Ross Wotherspoon.

The responsibilities of Head Girl and Boy Isla MacKenzie & Luke Gorman include: organising and leading Prefects; represent the school at events; organise the Pupils’ Council and homework clubs.

Deputy Captains, Gemma McLean  & Donald MacKenzie are responsible for organisation and support of charity events; coordination of the pupils involved with paired reading; helping organise scribing and reading for pupil assessments.

GWC / Heart Start Aultbea Defibrillator – Before the summer holiday pupils in S1, S2, S4 and S5 were given emergency first aid training by Heart Start Aultbea.  It was especially pleasing to see former pupils Bobby Mitchell, the group’s coordinator, and Rebecca Beaton back in school training our pupils.

Heart start Aultbea GWC presentation

As a follow up to this event, thanks to the efforts of Bobby Mitchell, funding was secured from the Great Wilderness Challenge and Gairloch High School received a defibrillator on Wednesday 21st August.  The device will be situated in the entrance hall to the Leisure Centre thereby being available for all users of the school building at all times.  Mr Nevis Hulme accepted the device on behalf of the school along with Head Girl Isla Mackenzie and Deputy Head Boy Donald Mackenzie. Also present to handover the device were Bobby Mitchell & Philip Maclachlian, Heart Start Aultbea and Chairman of GWC Eric Thomson.  Our thanks to all concerned.

When someone goes into cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces their chances of survival by 10%.  A defibrillator is a machine that delivers an electric shock to the heart when someone is having a cardiac arrest.

Former Pupil SuccessKieron Morrison has completed phase one of his basic army training.  Family attended his passing out parade in Harrogate recently.  Kieron has been offered a place in the Royal Army medical Corps. Congratulations Kieron!

Kieron

Kieron was an enthusiastic member of the ATC 832 Squadron and he took part in presentations to S2 and S4 pupils last week to show them some of the opportunities provided by taking part in the local ATC.

Malawi Update – Throughout July and August the staff and pupils held a variety of group and personal sponsorship events.  They have managed to raise around £4000 as a result of their efforts.  The events ranged from a Car Wash to a Music Quiz.  Along the way three of the pupils climbed Ben Nevis while others organised tombola, sold tons of cake, tablet and ice cream to locals and tourists alike.  We are also grateful to Dingwall Rotary for a donation of £350 and various other donations from families and friends.  Our group of 10 pupils and 4 staff will travel to Malawi in the October holiday.  Fundraising for the partnership will continue to support return visits for our Malawian counterparts.  More details of the trip will be available in the coming weeks but meantime you can watch one of the Ben Nevis ascents on YouTube via the school website or just search for “Ben Nevis climb for Gairloch-Malawi Partnership”.

Visit us here – The Gairloch Malawi Partnership on Facebook and feel free to LIKE our page!

Our school website area on Malawi features a report on Mr Hulme’s summer visit to Mlozi.

New Comenius Project – Members of the community may recall our first Comenius project, when staff and pupils were given the opportunity of visiting Latvia, Germany, Greece and Italy.  In addition, we welcomed colleagues and pupils from these countries to Scotland, their visit ending in a superb ceilidh in the village.  We have been successful in securing funding for a 2nd Comenius Project, which will run from now until July 2015.  The countries involved this time are: Latvia, Poland, Finland, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey.  This is an exciting opportunity for our staff and pupils to link with communities throughout Europe.  Our first trip is to Latvia in November; further trips and events will be reported as they develop.

Silver DofE Expedition – During the first week of September we had 2 groups out being assessed for their Silver Expedition.  Both successful, these expeditions took place in the “Great Wilderness”.  Participant Catherine Wyatt, S5, wrote the following report of her expedition for the Gairloch Times.

For our three day, Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition we stayed on local territory, walking from Gruinaird to Poolewe, camping for the first night at Larachantivore and for the second night at Carnmore. Arriving for our first nights camping we became increasingly aware of an ominous black mistiness rolling down the hillside. Tents were pitched and dinner cooked at top speed, to avoid getting caught in the inevitable deluge. The first drops arrived as Innis licked his plate clean, and we dived into our tents not to emerge until the morning.

Happy Campers at Carnmore

We awoke the next morning to much better weather. However as we progressed to Carnmore we discovered several streams had swollen to abnormal proportions, making the crossings challenging. The highlight of our second evening was the sighting of a shooting star by Ciaran and Innis, the night being clear and starry.

We returned to Poolewe the final day in bright sunshine, and once the initial weariness had worn off we began discussing the possibilities for gold…

Malawi Update – The fourteen staff and pupils heading for Malawi in October had their final training weekend recently.  The group worked on their projects as well as brushing up on language skills.  They also covered some more Health and Safety issues.  We are grateful to Mr Townsend of Laide Post Office for the donation of insect repellent for each of the travellers as well procuring our mosquito nets.  We have also received a contribution of £500 from the Parent Council.  On Thursday 12th September a final check took place with the parents.  Everything is on track for the trip.  The group leaves Scotland on Wednesday 2nd October for Malawi returning on the Saturday19th October just in time to return to school!

Ceangal Artists work with senior art pupils – On Wednesday 28th August, 2 Artists from the Ceangal International Artists’ Residency came into school with Ms Gulliver to work with senior art pupils.  The pupils were learning about some Indian folk art traditions, in particular Rangoli and Henna tattoos.

S5/6 Rangoli

Kiaran and Beena come from the north west of India, but the production of Rangoli takes place all over the country, particularly at the time of festivals such as Diwali, or to welcome guests.  Symmetrical patterns are drawn out on the floor, close to the front door or perhaps in inner courtyards.  These are filled in by sprinkling coloured powders with the hands.  Traditionally rice flour is coloured with such things as ochre and turmeric but these days, many synthetic materials are used, which give brighter, stronger colours.  Beena demonstrated with sand from Gairloch beach that had been coloured with Dylon dyes.  The pupils had a go themselves and, as with all these things, found the process much harder than anticipated.

The pupils then watched Beena produce a design with henna.  This is most often done on the hands, either on the palm or the back of the hand and on this occasion, Ms Gulliver was the guinea pig!  Henna is a natural dye produced from a plant.  It is formed into a powder, mixed into a paste and traditionally it would be applied to the skin with a small stick.  These days, however, it can be bought in small convenient tubes, the tops of which can be cut off so that the paste can be squeezed directly on to the skin.  Patterns are swirling and intricate and often look quite organic.  After being left to dry, the henna can be washed off and the dyed pattern remains below as a temporary ‘tattoo’. The day before a wedding in India, the bride-to-be meets with her friends and female relatives to apply henna patterns to each others arms, feet and legs.  Our example was not quite so extensive, but enjoyed by all nevertheless.

Many thanks to the Artists and Ms Gulliver for coming into school to share these processes with the pupils.

Culture Club and Higher English trip to Eden Court, Wednesday 28th August to see the National Theatre of Scotland/Royal Shakespeare Company Production “Dunsinane” by David Craig – The Higher English class and several Culture Clubbers travelled to Inverness after school to see this excellent production of David Craig’s play about Scotland after the death of Macbeth.  Lady Macbeth, Gruach, has not taken her own life after all, and claims she is the rightful queen, so the English commander Siward finds that his mission to restore Malcolm to the throne is more complicated than expected. The theme of the play is about the “impulse to do good which can often end up causing as much or, indeed, more bloodshed” according to the playwright, who wrote the play as Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq crumbled, and recognises the relevance his play still has to current events in the Middle East.  The strength of the production, however, was also in its mix of strong characters and performances, humour, a striking set design and live music onstage, making it a memorable and thought-provoking experience for everyone.

Former Pupil Success – Calum Mackison has been awarded a BSc Hons (2.1) in Audio Engineering by the University of the Highlands and Islands.  Well done Calum!

Currently Calum is very busy gaining experience as a sound technician in various venues in Perth, and further afield, including Belladrum and the Runrig concert at the Black Isle showground.

Skills for Work Trip -  9 pupils studying Rural Skills and Tourism courses travelled to Badaguish for a 3-day fact finding trip. The group heard a variety of presentations at the site visits and had the opportunity to ask questions relating to their courses.  At the Highland Folk Museum, Graham Cross, Operations Manager, gave an interesting overview of the attraction, before pupils were given time to explore the extensive site and enjoy the experience of a 1930s handwriting lesson.

Badaguish Trip S5/6

At Cairngorm Mountain, Ross Coulter from the marketing team, provided insights into the running of the business.

Next to Glenmore Lodge, Scotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre. Principal, Bob Kinnaird, gave an overview of the Lodge and its course provisio,  followed by a guided tour from Jenny Clark, Operations Manager. The group was impressed with the standard of the facilities at the centre, especially the gym!

In the evening, Sally Dowden, owner of Speyside Wildlife, visited us and told us about her business. It is a very successful company based in Speyside, offering bird and wildlife watching holidays all over the world. She talked enthusiastically about the tourism industry and how important it is to ensure the customers have a good time.

On our final morning, we met David Kinnear, the Factor at Alvie Estate. He gave us a tour of the estate in order to show the diversification of a traditional Highland Estate: livestock farming, pony trekking, stalking, grouse shooting, strawberry farming, wood chip production, luxury accommodation and the holiday park are just some of the ways the Estate makes its money.

All the presenters were enthusiastic and motivational and the pupils gained a valuable insight into possible careers in the tourism and rural skills sectors. Thanks to Douglas Gibson for organising the visits and for accompanying Mr Milner, Mrs Johnston and the senior pupils on the trip.

Mòd Rois an Iar – Is mise Sandi Nic Ill-Eathain agus tha mi anns a’ chiad bhliadhna. Bha mi aig Mòd Rois an Iar air an 20mh den t-Sultain. Bha am Mòd ann an Poll Iù.

My name is Sandi MacLean and I am in S1. I went to the Mod in Poolewe on Friday the 20th of September.

Local Mod 2013

Chaidh na sgoilearan Gàidhlig ann air a’ bhus le Mgr Cuimeanach agus le Andy, an dorsair, a bha gar dràibheadh. Bha sgoilearan gu leòr eile às an Ard-sgoil a’ gabhail pàirt cuideachd.

Pupils in Gaelic competitions travelled on the mini-bus with Mr Cumming and with Andy the Janitor who drove us there. There were lots of other High School pupils taking part too.

Bha an latha math airson a h-uile duine, tha mi a’ smaointinn. Bha e spòrsail, nearbhach agus sgìtheil. Bha sinn a’ ruith bhon talla, dhan sgoil agus dhan eaglais airson na co-fharpaisean.

It was a good day for everyone, I think! It was fun, nerve-wracking and tiring. We were running from the hall to the school and to the church for the competitions.

Local Mod 2013

Bha na co-fharpaisean agam-sa uabhasach math! Fhuair mi cupa airson seinn traidiseanta, an dàrna àite airson leughadh a’ Bhìoball, an dàrna àite ann an còmhradh agus an dàrna àite a-rithist le seinn aon-neach. Tha mi uabhasach toilichte leis na fhuair mi.

My competitions were very good! I got a cup for traditional singing, second for Bible Reading, second for conversation and second again for solo singing. I am very happy with what I got.

Bidh mi a’ dol dhan Mhòd Nàiseanta ann am Pàislig agus tha mi a’ coimhead air adhart ri sin. Ach feumaidh mi tòrr obair a dhèanamh air an òran agam!

I will be going to the National Mod in Paisley and I’m looking forward to that. But I will have to do a lot of practice on my song.

Malawi Adventure – On the 2nd October ten pupils and four staff from Gairloch High School flew from Edinburgh Aiport to visit friends and learning partners in Mlozi School in Malawi.  The partnership began several years ago when Dr Caley became a Global Teacher and visited Mlozi.  Previously successful staff exchanges have taken place with support from Link Community Development and the Global Council however it was always going to be a challenge to get a large group of pupils to Malawi.

The group has been raising funds for over a year and many sponsored events have taken place.  Car washes, cakes sales and sponsored walks up Ben Nevis raised lots.  Busking with pipes in Inverness, a film quiz in Aultbea and selling ice cream on the beach at Mellon Udrigle were other innovative ways of raising funds.

While in Malawi the pupils will carry out projects involving scientific experiments, jewellery making, netball, Scottish dance and music.  The pupils have written a song especially for the trip.  Pupils have also been learning some of the local language and will find out about the influence of David Livingstone on Malawi while there.  On our return pupils will share their experiences with the rest of the school and its community including the local Primary schools.

All being well the group will return to Scotland on 19th October but the partnership will continue to raise funds to assist children and staff from Mlozi to visit Gairloch.

Malawi Travellers return – Gemma McLean writes: We’re back and with lots of stories! The group of 10 pupils and 4 teachers arrived back on Saturday 19th October after a 36-hour journey; everyone was pretty tired. We loved it! We learnt lots and met some amazing people who are always smiling, no matter what. It made us appreciate what we have and admire how they make the most of the resources they have. The trip will be a precious memory to everyone and we will share these with you in the near future.

Keep up to date with our photos and videos here and like our Facebook page here.

National Mod Success – Four of our pupils took part in the National Mod in Paisley during the holidays: Catherine MacRae (solo-singing), Sandi MacLean (solo-singing), Alasdair MacDonald (accordion) and Megan Copland (solo-singing).  They each enjoyed the competitions they entered. Sandi did particularly well in traditional singing. She came third for girls under thirteen.  Sandi sang her song at School Assembly on Wednesday 23rd October and captivated everyone with her performance.

Am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail - Ghabh ceathrar de na sgoilearan againn pàirt anns a’ Mhòd Nàiseanta ann am Pàislig anns na saor-làithean: Catherine NicRath, Sandi NicIll-Eathain, Alasdair MacDhòmhnaill agus Megan Copland. Charities -Jeans for Genes Day took place on Friday 27th September. Jeans for Genes is a charity that aims to improve the lives of children with genetic disorders, care for their families and invest in research. Pupils (and staff) had the opportunity to wear their jeans to school in return for a contribution towards this worthwhile cause. Highland Small Schools’ Football Tournament – Iain Nelson reports:  On Thursday 24th of October I was part of a team of S2/S3 boys travelling to Ullapool to compete in the Highland Small Schools’ Football League. This was the North Qualifying Tournament; a similar one took place in the South. Our team won 4 games and drew 1, gaining 13 points which meant that we finished in 1st place out of 6 teams. David MacGregor was top goal scorer with 4 goals whilst Kenneth Mackenzie, Joseph Stewart and Mark McLean each scored 1. This gave us a total of 7 goals scored and only 1 conceded – thanks to brave goalkeeping from Ali MacLean. We were very happy with our performance beating Kinlochbervie 2-0 with goals from David MacGregor and Joseph Stewart, Golspie 1-0 with a goal from David MacGregor, Dornoch 1-0 with a last minute goal from Mark McLean, Farr 2-0 with goals from David MacGregor and Kenneth Mackenzie and a 1-1 draw against Ullapool with another goal from David MacGregor.  Click on the photo to see some more images.

Charities – The “Wear it Pink” day on 25th October, which included a sale of lots of home baking, raised £340.32 for Breast Cancer Care UK and Julie Alexander’s Fund Raising Shop contributed a further £100. A Halloween fancy dress day on 31st October, which saw many extraordinary and imaginative costumes, often rendering the wearer unrecognisable, raised £203.20 which will be split between two local causes: the Torridon Mountain Rescue Team and the Coastguard service. Well done to all who helped to organise these events and thanks to everyone who contributed.

Breast Cancer Awareness

That’s over £900 raised for charity already this session, excluding any funds for Malawi. Our next event will be for BBC Children in Need on the 15th November.

Robotic Pyeloplasty – Ten senior pupils were able to watch a live kidney operation through the wonders of the Internet, on Monday 4th November. Consultant surgeon Mr Ranjan Thilagarajah from the Broomfield hospital in Essex carried out the operation. The pupils were able to ask him questions via Skype afterwards. The procedure (a ‘pyeloplasty’) was carried out by a £1.6M robot that Mr Thilagarajah controlled remotely, allowing damage to the kidney to be minimised. It made for fascinating viewing. Also watching was a conference of Urological surgeons in Sri Lanka.

Thanks to Cerno Health for granting access to the event and to Susan MacLean from the West Highland College, for allowing access to their wireless network.

Deasbad Nàiseanta Ghàidhlig  BT / BT National Gaelic DebateChaidh Deasbad na bliadhna seo a chumail ann an Steòrnabhagh air a’ chòigeamh agus an t-siathamh latha den t-Samhainn. Am-bliadhna, ’s iad Calum Nelson agus Alfie Gudgeon a ghabh pàirt. ’S ann an aghaidh Ardsgoil Lochabar a bha na balaich agus ’s e am moladh a bh’ aca: “Bu chòir lagh a bhith ann gun dean daoine a tha a’ faighinn sochairean sòisealta, agus a tha fallain, obair fheumail sa choimhearsnachd”. Aig a’ cheann thall, bha sgioba Gheàrrloch beagan mì-fhortanach nach deach iad air adhart dhan ath-chuairt ach ’s e deagh chothrom a bha anns an tachartas dha na balaich:

This year’s Debate was held in Stornoway on the 5th and 6th of November.  Calum Nelson and Alfie Gudgeon took part this year. The boys were against Lochaber High School and their motion was “There should be a law that those who are healthy and receive social benefits will do useful work in the community”. At the end, the Gairloch team was a little unfortunate not to progress to the next round but the event was a good opportunity for the boys.

Calum: Bha e inntinneach na deasbadan eile fhaicinn. Chòrd an deasbad againn rium agus saoilidh mi gun urrainn dhomh cànan nas fheàrr a chleachdadh san sgoil às dèidh dhomh pàirt a ghabhail. It was interesting to see the other debates. I enjoyed our own debate and I think that I will be able to use a higher level of language in school having taken part.

Alfie: ‘S e eòlas uabhasach feumail is spòrsail a bh’ anns an Deasbad air mo shon. Saoilidh mi gum bi mi nas fheàrr air deasbadan anns an àm ri teachd. Cuideachd, tha mi a’ smaointinn gu bheil mi nas dearbhte a-nis.The Debate was a useful, fun experience for me. I think that I will be better at debating in the future. I also am of the opinion that I am more confident now.

Malawi Reports – The pupils who visited our partner school have been providing talks and feedback in the form of presentations to others in the community. Kalvin Fraser spoke to the ATC, while Eilidh Maclennan, Beth Townsend and Luke Gorman prepared food and spoke to the Youth Fellowship. Pupils have also been visiting classes in school and answering questions after handing out letters and photo from pen-pals. Over the next few weeks the team will visit all of our associated Primary Schools. Everyone is invited to the school on the evening of Tuesday 10th December at 7pm to share our stories.  The second part of our news report from the pupils is available here on our pages dedicated to the Project.

Comenius Trip to Latvia – Becky Griggs and Innis Taylor have returned from a successful trip to Latvia. Accompanied by Miss Dean and Miss Hunter we expect a report in the next issue. The next trip takes place in January when some of our pupils will travel to Portugal.

Highland Young Musicians – On Saturday 23rd November 9 of our pupils took part in variousconcert performances at the McDonald Conference Centre in Aviemore. The event was well attended and the performances were truly magical. First on at 2.30pm was Nessie Gearing (S6) in the Highland Schools Wind Band playing trumpet. At 3.10pm Megan Copland (S3) and Eilidh Owens (S5) sang a range of songs in Gaelic as members of Còisir G. This was followed by some wonderful big band music from Highland Youth Big Band including our own Oscar Howard (S5). At 5.40pm Leonie Baptist (S2) and Hannah Wood (S2) tackled some difficult pieces (including Barber’s Adagio for Strings) as part of the Highland Youth String Orchestra. Next followed a very professional performance from SNAS. Folk music to dance to by enthusiastic young people that included Becky Griggs (S6) on fiddle and Luke Gorman (S6) on keyboard. Finally Nessie (trumpet) joined Freya Baptist (S4/violin) in the Highland Regional Youth Orchestra performing Elgar and Tchaikovsky. A wonderful day of music that showcased some exceptional talent from Highland that included a good number of young people from Gairloch.

Basketball National Schools’ Cup – The school hosted the Nicolson Institute (Stornoway) last Friday for U14 and open boys’ basketball games, as part of the National Schools’ Cup.

The U14 game was a nail biter, with a two-point lead switching throughout the last quarter. Unfortunately, Gairloch lost at the end 40 – 42. Well done to the team for keeping us entertained.

The open boys put in a strong performance, winning 42 – 75. We’ve been working on organisation and structure and it really paid off.

Thanks to John Kerray, regional development officer and Kevin Peat for helping with refereeing. Most of all, thanks to the Nicolson Institute for taking the trouble to come over on a rough day!

New Strips – Both our teams will be entering the Highland Schools’ League in the new term. The boys need new strips, with the U14s having outgrown theirs and the seniors using second hand ones with not enough to go round. If anyone is able to support us in the purchase of new strips, please contact Mr Johnston at the school.

Charities – On Friday 15th November, pupils (and staff!) had a chance to wear pyjamas to school to raise money for the BBC Children in Need Appeal. A cake sale was also organised at interval by senior pupils – always popular. A total of £376.66, which included a £10 donation from Poolewe Nursery, was raised. Well done to all who helped to organise this event and thanks to everyone who contributed. Particular thanks to Catherine Wyatt and Miss MacAllister: Catherine baked a magnificent Pudsey Bear cake to guess the weight which was won by Miss MacAllister, who then had it cut up and slices sold for further fund raising. A special mention also to Jasmine Connop in S2 who raised money earlier in the week by managing a day’s sponsored silence whilst at school.

Turas Sabhal Mòr Ostaig – Air an 13mh den t-Samhain, shiubhail seachdnar sgoilearan sa chòigeamh san t-seasamh bhliadhna dha Sabhal Mòr Ostaig,’s ùidh againn ann a bhith a’ cumail a’ dol le foghlam Gàidhlig as dèidh dhuinn an sgoil fhàgail. Dh’fhàg sinn an sgoil aig leth uair an dèidh ochd sa mhadainn, is ràinig sinn Sabhal Mòr Ostaig mu chairteal gu aon uair deug. Bha sgoiltean eile an sin cuideachd, Acadamaidh Inbhir Pheofharain is Sgoil a’ Phluic nam measg. Ghabh sinn pàirt ann am bùth-obrach dràma, is an uair sin dh’èist sinn ri taisbeanadh, a bha ag innse dhuinn beagan mu dheidhinn na cùrsaichean a tha iad a’ tairgse. As dèidh diathad a bha an-asgaidh on cholaiste, bha sinn air ar toirt mun cuairt an toglaich, is sinn air ar cur ann am buidheannan de dhaoine a bha fileanta as a’ Ghàidhlig, is feadhainn a bha ag ionnsachadh. Bha cothrom againn àite-fuirich nan oileanach fhaicinn, is an uair sin b’ urrainn dhuinn ceistean a chur air daoine a tha a’ rannsachadh aig a’ cholaiste an-dràsta. As dèidh sin, rinn sinn ar slighe air ais dhachaigh. Ràinig sinn an sgoil aig còig uairean. ‘S e là inntinneach a bh’ ann, ged a bha an t-slighe an sin gu math fada. As dèidh an turais, tha cuid nas cinntiche gur ann dha Sabhal Mòr Ostaig a tha iad airson falbh as dèidh sgoil, is tha cuid eile cuideachd a’ smaointinn gur dòcha nach e an suidheachadh a b’ fheàrr a th’ ann dhaibhsan. Mòran taing do Andy, an dorsair, a thug an sin sinn.

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Trip – On the 13th of November, seven fifth and sixth year pupils travelled to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, with an interest in continuing their Gàidhlig education once they leave school. We left the school at half past eight, and arrived at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig at about quarter to eleven. Other schools were also at the event, including Dingwall Academy and Plockton High School. We participated in a drama workshop, and then listened to a presentation which told us a bit about the courses they offer. After lunch, provided by the college free of charge, we were taken on a tour around the buildings, once we had separated into groups of fluent Gaelic speakers and learners. We were given the opportunity to see the student accommodation, and then given the chance to ask some students, who are studying at the college right now, questions. After that, we made our way home, and reached the school at five o’ clock. It was an interesting day, even though the journey was quite long. After the trip, some are more certain that they want to go to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig after school, and others think that maybe it isn’t the best place for them. Thank you to Andy, the janitor, for driving us there. (Ceitidh Alice Hulme, S5)

Art Exhibition and 2014 Calendar – The exhibition at the GALE Centre opened last week and shows the work of pupils doing Art in the School. The exhibition continues and is worth a visit. Calendars are available from the school office priced £6. Please support school funds by ordering copies for friends and family. Thanks to Mrs Caroline Browne and her pupils for providing such creative work both as part of the exhibition and for the calendar.

Big Questions Day – As part of our Religious and Moral Education programme we encourage to our pupils to consider and think about major issues and develop critical thinking skills understanding where their own beliefs come from.  This can be challenging for some but rewarding for those who take part.

On Thursday 28th November S5/6 pupils welcomed representatives from the local churches to spend a day with them thinking about ‘big’ moral questions.  The theme was: The value of a human being.  After an introductory session looking at the value of different occupations and then gauging opinions on a range of philosophical questions, the main focus of the day moved to the issue of voluntary euthanasia. The group worked in teams to identify the key arguments on both sides of the debate in preparation for what turned into a very lively discussion on whether or not assisted suicide should be legalised (as it is in several European countries).  Pupils also had a chance to explore the answers to some of their questions on a wide range of philosophical issues with the visitors before the end of the day.  This was a good opportunity for pupils to think through and to develop their own views and opinions, by talking about them and by listening to the views of their peers, and they participated with enthusiasm and maturity.  We are grateful to our guests who were able to discuss these issues without bias whilst making it clear that their opinions were based on their own beliefs.

Feedback from S5 and S6 pupils taking part was very positive and on that basis this was one of the most successful events that we have organised in school this session!  Thanks to Mrs MacRae for arranging this for a second year in succession.

Comenius Project 2013-2015 – The High School has, for the second time, been successful in applying for funding for a Comenius Project.  The Project title is “The Four Natural Elements and their impact on our lives”, and the countries involved are Latvia, Portugal, Poland, Greece, Turkey, Finland, Spain and Scotland.

As in the last project, pupils and staff from Gairloch High School will travel to each of these countries, making presentations on their research of the Project.  In addition, they will sample life in other European schools and communities, as well as experiencing the contrasting cultures; also on the agenda will be a great deal of “making friends” and “having fun”!

In November, Ms. Hunter and Ms. Dean accompanied pupils Becky Griggs and Innis Taylor to Latvia.  After a few days in the capital city, Riga, they went to the Comenius school of Preili, where they met their hosts for the week.  The trip was filled with many different experiences, including architecture, history, crafts, music and dance.  All had a wonderful week, and look forward to sharing photos and films with the school and the general public in the near future.

The next trip is in January, when pupils Sara Johnston, Eilidh Johnston and Caitlin Mitchell will travel to Oporto in Portugal.

Gairloch High School, Gaelic Resources and the John Muir Trust – S4 pupils were recently involved with the John Muir Trust – translating various items in to Gaelic. Pupils who took part in this project were Rowan Mackenzie, Callum Mackenzie, Alfie Gudgeon and Calum Nelson. The latest John Muir Award e-bulletin contained the following:

Gairloch High School and Gaelic Resource – Mòran taing (many thanks) to Gairloch High School students and their teacher who took up the challenge to translate the John Muir Award certificate cover letter into Gaelic. This accompanies the existing Record Books, and John Muir Discovery Award Certificates that are currently available as a Gaelic resource.

Seafood Cookery Course – The High School played host to the Seafood and Shellfish cookery course on Monday with local people and Professional Cookery seniors taking part in the two-hour event, led by Jess Dodds of Dry Island Shellfish.  The pupils and other participants had the chance to prepare a variety of seafood including crabs, squat lobsters mussels and made a delicious Thai Fish Curry.  The event was arranged by Susan MacLean of West Highland College and the school for the provided the use of the Home Economics room for the morning.

S5 Visit to Munro Slaughterhouse – On Thursday the 14th November our Rural Skills class (Neil, John, Jake and Ross) went to the abattoir in Dingwall to find out how the business works and to see where all our meat comes from. Here is their report:  When we arrived John Munro met us and he showed us round the premises. We looked at the penning area, slaughter room and freezers where meat is hung and ready for cutting or packing. We were shown animals being killed, butchered and packed ready for selling.  Each week 150 sheep, 100 cows and 50 pigs are slaughtered for market or for private use.

When Cattle get sent to the abattoir they come with a passport and that has their ear tag on it, farm number, gender and breed of cattle. They also have passports for things like disease control and so it maintains consumer confidence.  In this trade there is a four-year apprenticeship to become a slaughter man or a butcher.

Amended Curriculum Structure from Session 2014/2015

Before Christmas parents of S1 and S2 pupils were sent information regarding changes to our curriculum structures that will be implemented next session.  This has a bearing on planning taking place for course choice for pupils in S2 about to enter the third year of their Broad General Education.

The attached information is a copy of the information sent to all those with children in S1 and S2.  We have discussed these changes with the Parent Council and asked pupils throughout the school to give their views on the changes.

Enclosed (click here) is the current version of the plan with some explanatory notes.  We believe this is the best solution for our pupils within existing resources that meets the requirements of the steer produced by Highland Council.  These changes will be implemented with the next timetable which starts in May for current S2 pupils.  If your son or daughter is in S1 just now they will come into effect when they enter S3.

Parents of S2 are invited to a meeting with the Senior Management Team and Pupil Support on Tuesday 14th January 2014 at 7pm.

If any parent of S1 wishes to discuss the details I would suggest they attend the next Parent Council Meeting or arrange to see me at the school.

Best wishes for the New Year from everyone at the school – As we enter 2014 it’s back to work with a vengeance. Prelims for S4/5/6 pupils begin on the Tuesday 14th January.  After-school study clubs have already taken place first week back.

S2 parents have been invited to the school on the evening of the 14th January to discuss course choices in preparation for their sons and daughters entering S3 next session.  The relevant paperwork was sent home before Christmas and is available here on the school website.

At assembly before the Christmas holiday the following pupils were awarded the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award:  Silver – Siobhan Vickerstaff,  Bronze – Freya Baptist, Charlie Bulmer, Alfie Gudgeon, Joseph Smith, Calum Nelson and Matthew MacLean.  Well done to each of them for putting in the effort and commitment required to achieve this prestigious award!

S6 Christmas Dance 2013

The School Christmas Dance was a great success with music, food and dancing right up to 11pm and beyond. Thanks go to everyone who helps make this fabulous occasion possible – the list is long but the pupils appreciate it.  Office staff sell tickets and manage the finance.  Mrs. Fraser and Mrs. Mackenzie, along with others too numerous to mention, who purchase and prepare the half-time banquet.  On the night this group of staff spend the first half of the evening in the school preparing the food while the pupils dance to the music.  Trish and Bruce provided the music this year and it was VERY well received by all.  Prior to the dance Mrs. Johnston and other staff helped teach and reinforce social dance skills allowing S1 to S6 pupils to participate comfortably with reels, waltzes and jigs.  Our piping tutor, Mr. Gary Nimmo and the newly formed pipe band provided a rousingly traditional opening.  We are greatly appreciative of the continued support of the local garage for laying on transport to and from the dance along with additional minibus driving this year from Mr. Bowker and Dr Shearer.

Finally it is worth mentioning that it is the pupils’ participation and enthusiasm that make this such an event and worthy of the effort put in by so many.

Krypton Factor, Indoor Rowing & School Quiz – We like to end the term with a variety of activities that are important educationally yet encourage a sense of community and challenge.  Thanks to Mr. Hulme and Dr Caley the school quiz provides a challenge that all pupils can take part in! Pupils are mixed into House Teams and compete for House points.  Impressively this year the quiz continued through a power cut and much fun was had trying to attempt the picture rounds in the looming darkness of a December afternoon!

The pupils also took part in an Inter-House indoor rowing competition organised by Mrs. Johnston and her Activity Tourism pupils. House points could be gained either as part of a team event or by taking part in an individual rowing challenge.  Nearly every pupil in the school attempted a personal challenge.  Well done all!

Indoor Rowing Competition 2013

Finally Mr. Johnston with help from many staff organized a Krypton Factor Challenge.  Pupils, again in House Teams, took part in Mental Arithmetic, Mental Agility, Observation and Listening, Strength, Endurance & Sports’ Skills.  All had good fun and we hope that pupils get to know each other a little better by taking part in events that are a bit different from the norm.

Previously on the evening of Tuesday 10th December a large number of parents and other members of the community turned out to hear our S5 and S6 pupils talk about their recent trips abroad.  The 10 pupils that went to Malawi each spoke for around 5 minutes describing different aspects of the trip.  After a refreshment break that included a range of Scottish, Malawian and Latvian cake and sweets, Innis Taylor and Becky Griggs gave a presentation about their recent trip to Latvia.  It was an enjoyable evening that showed the benefits of opportunities offered to pupils.  Thanks must be given to all the staff involved in supporting the pupils throughout!

On Wednesday 11th December we had our annual Christmas Lunch prepared by Mrs Libby McLean and her canteen staff.  This year the Prefects suggested a Christmas dress code.  They purchased Christmas Crackers and took donations form staff and pupils.  As a result the school donated £80 to the Salvation Army in Inverness!  Well done to the pupils for taking the initiative and introducing an enjoyable and worthy variation that is likely to be repeated next year.

Academic Achievement Awards – After a review of our current prize lists we plan to introduce trophies and prizes for pupils who show outstanding achievement in the areas of Mathematics, Science, Technology and Geography.  These would be presented to pupils as part of the annual prizegiving ceremony in June.   If any individual, organisation or business is interested in sponsoring a particular subject award then they are invited to contact John Port, Headteacher, to discuss the options.  The cost of trophies and any associated prize is not normally burdensome and we are grateful to several groups and individuals in the community who currently contribute towards recognising the success of our youngsters.  The Headteacher can be contacted by telephoning 712275, by letter or email (gairloch.high@highland.gov.uk).

Beach Clean – Our S1 pupils have been down at the beach next to the golf course in Gairloch trying to clean up after the recent storms.  The dunes have been damaged extensively but of more concern is the amount of plastic washed up amongst the seaweed.  S1 pupils spent an hour or two filling bags that were later collected by the local Council Refuse Collectors.  The pupils did this as part of their S1 Activity course called SMART, part of which contributes to their achieving the John Muir Discovery Award.  The award supports pupils taking responsibility and forming an understanding of their local environment.

Basketball Result – The senior boys played Alness Academy on Thursday 16th January, in the first game of the new Highland Schools’ League. In a tough encounter, the score was even at half time. Despite good rebounding and defence, we couldn’t keep out their biggest player and the full time score was 54 – 65 to Alness. This is our best ever result against this team.

Event Management and Hospitality – The S5/6 Hospitality Class planned and prepared food for the Torridon Mountain Rescue Team training weekend at Badaguish (Friday 10th to Sunday 12th January). Working to a budget, the group planned all the meals for fourteen people over an active weekend, bought and prepared the food, and packed it ready to go. The menu included cooked breakfasts, lots of choice for packed lunches, and dinner on Saturday night was cottage pie and apple crumble.  All the MRT members had to do was stick it in the oven! The food was delicious, and there was lots of it. The S3 group also baked a mountain of tray bakes so there was no risk of going hungry between meals. All the team was very impressed by the food and sends thanks to the pupils and Miss Thistlewaite for their hard work.

Former Pupil Success – Emma Felber, daughter of Katherine Vine, received her Doctorate from London University on 17th December 2013.  Emma’s thesis was entitled ‘Memory, mobility and social change in a Bolivian town’, and it was done at the anthropology department at Goldsmiths College. Emma says that it is about what happens when rural places are abandoned and people who have moved to the city remember them nostalgically. She notes that growing up in Wester Ross inspired her work.

Emma’s brother Crispin Struthers has been nominated for an Oscar for editing American Hustle.  He was nominated last year for his work on Silver Linings Playbook.

Comenius Project – In 2013, Gairloch High School was successful in obtaining funding for a 2nd Comenius project, administered through the British Council.  This funding allows pupils and staff from the school to travel to 7 other European countries: Latvia, Portugal, Poland, Greece, Turkey, Finland and Spain.

In November of last year, there was the initial meeting in Preili, Latvia, and in January, everyone met in Porto, Portugal.  Both these trips and future visits will allow pupils and their teachers from all 8 countries to meet together and forge friendships as well as exploring educational and cultural similarities and differences between them.  During the visits, pupils stay with host families, and this is an invaluable part of the Comenius experience.

The project everyone is studying is “The Four Natural Elements and their Effect on Our Lives”.  Pupils will be exploring how we are affected, in Gairloch and in Scotland as a whole, by water, wind, earth and fire.  During the visits to our partner countries,  they will be presenting their findings in the form of slideshows, films and prepared talks.

For the trip to Latvia in November 2013, all the partner countries prepared introductions to their schools, towns and countries.  Becky Griggs and Innis Taylor were very worthy ambassadors from Gairloch; their presentation left our European friends looking forward to the Scottish meeting in 2015.  One of the many highlights of the trip was a visit to a historical outdoor museum, where original mediaeval buildings from all over Latvia have been preserved.  As music and crafts are vital elements of Latvia’s history and culture, participants were also treated to the singing, dancing, knitting and sewing which so impressed everyone during the week in this beautiful Baltic country.

Comenius Latvia

Becky and Innis in Riga, Latvia – November 2013

Pupils Caitlin Mitchell, Eilidh Johnston and Sara Johnston  accompanied teachers Beth Hunter and Andrew Johnston to the seaside port of Porto, Portugal in January.   The girls gave an impressive presentation of “Our Lives by the Sea”, and also entertained everyone with Caitlin’s Highland dancing accompanied by Sara’s fiddle playing.  The places they visited during the week included a chocolate factory, the FC Porto stadium and the famous port wine cellars, which lent their name to the city itself.  Pupils and staff experienced fantastic Portuguese hospitality during a busy and enjoyable week.

Each of the European meetings will be followed by an evening, open to all in the community, where pupils and teachers can share these unique experiences through photos, films, displays and refreshments from the country visited.

Comenius Portugal

Pupils & teachers from Scotland, Latvia, Portugal, Poland, Turkey, Finland and Spain.

CERNO visit – Recently Gairloch High School welcomed visitors involved in an ICT Education project.  Mr Ranjan Thilagarajah (consultant surgeon), Mr Gary Disley (Cerno Education) and a film cameraman visited with the aim of speaking to pupils and filming lessons with a view to making the events available on the Internet for wider viewing.  If this technique could be perfected at an economic price, lessons could be made available to pupils who were not in school either in real time or later on.

CERNO visit

Mr Thilagarajah is involved in pioneering robotic surgery in the UK and spoke to S1/2/3 pupils about his work and their ambitions within the medical profession. He repeated the talk with S4/5/6 pupils.  His main message was how important it is to stand out from the crowd, in terms of outside interests as well as academic qualifications.  Pupils also got the chance to try out their keyhole surgery skills in simulators. The Cerno Education team also filmed lessons in Biology and Gaelic for their website.  On Thursday after school, Prof Dave Barclay gave a fascinating talk on forensic science (and the importance of logic and lateral thinking) to staff and senior pupils.  Mr Disley spoke to pupils about his experience in local radio and news production for the BBC and Sky.  When the team left on Friday the cameraman was en route to New York to do some work for Microsoft.

There was a real buzz about the school when the events were on. Thanks to Susan MacLean (at West Highland College for accommodating one of the sessions at short notice) and Mr Johnston (for arranging the whole event).

Exam action planning – Pupils in S4, 5 and 6 will be given action plans over the next few weeks to help them prepare for their qualifications. In most cases, these will direct them to aspects of their courses on which they need to concentrate to be successful in forthcoming exams. In other cases, it may be work required for coursework.

S3 will have exams in March and to help them prepare for these, they are also being given action plans. This will be their first experience with a number of assessments concentrated in short period of time. This will give them the opportunity to improve their revision skills and give them an insight into the work required for exams that become far more important when they move into S4.

We would welcome the support or parents and carers to encourage pupils to use these action plans and to revise sufficiently for their goals.

S6 Student Awards Agency for Scotland – Some of our pupils have now received unconditional offers for University including Mathematics, Zoology, Civil and Nautical Engineering.  It is is time for S6 and parents to look at the Funding guide for full-time Undergraduate Study on the following website -www.saas.gov.uk

Academic Achievement Awards – If any individual, organisation or business is interested in sponsoring outstanding achievement in the areas of Mathematics, Science, Technology and Geography they are invited to contact John Port, Headteacher, to discuss.  The cost of a trophy and any associated prize is not normally burdensome and we are grateful to several groups and individuals in the community who currently contribute towards recognising the success of our youngsters.  The Headteacher can be contacted by telephoning 712275, by letter or email gairloch.high@highland.gov.uk.

Education Scotland Inspection of Hospitality – HMIe, now called Education Scotland, visited the school to inspect the provision of Hospitality by West Highland College staff in Gairloch High School.  The inspection went exceedingly well and our visitor was really impressed by the enthusiasm and focus of the pupils. The inspector commented that she could tell that the pupils got a lot out of the course, and was impressed to see that they had each passed the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) Food Hygiene certificate.  Thanks to West Highland College for supporting this course in school and Kirsty Thistlethwaite, our Hospitality instructor.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – Bethan Townsend, S5, received her Bronze DofE Award at assembly on Friday 14th February.  Well-done Beth!

UNICEF non-uniform day – On Friday 14th February pupils had a non-uniform day to raise funds for UNICEF.  In conjunction with this S1 pupil Emily Morrison arranged for a sweet sale to help her mum raise funds for Clic Sargent.  Emily’s mum is raising funds by running the London Marathon.

Basketball result – On Wednesday 5th February, the senior boys’ basketball team played Inverness Royal Academy. We won 59 – 44 with a convincing performance from all players. We are continuing to take on (and win) against much larger schools.  The boys train hard with the support of Mr Johnston, Mr Gorman and Mr Milner in school.

Pupils will bring home a letter from the Headteacher, Mr Port, this week reminding parents of the need for pupils to attend school on a very regular basis.  While there is always sometimes the need to stay off school either for medical or family reasons, attendance should be very high (95-100&) for nearly all pupils.  Too often pupils miss important work, deadlines or assessments due to absence.  Attendance Letter for parents (pdf).

World Book Day  - For World Book Day on 6th March, 2014, Yasmeen, our librarian, came up with a very interesting idea which she called “Speed Book Dating”  – but don’t worry, it’s not what it sounds like!

The S2 Book Group members each had to choose a book that we liked:  Caitlin Mitchell chose “Twilight” by Stephenie Meyer; Carys Townsend chose “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” by JK Rowling; Eilidh MacDonald chose “Evermore” by Alison Noel; Hannah Wood chose “I’d Tell You I Love You But Then I’d Have To Kill You” by Ally Carter; Jasmine Connop chose “The Diary of Dorkius Maximus” by Tim Collins; Jade Paterson chose “Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour” by Morgan Matson – Christie Wilson (S3) stood in for Jade on the day; and Olivia Walker and Leonie Baptist chose “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan – Leonie did the talk on the day.

Book Dating Certificates

We prepared during breaks and lunchtimes in the library, by printing out pictures and making signs and bunting.  On the day, we set up tables and laid out the books, then at lunchtime people visited the Library and we had one minute to tell each one about our chosen book.  As the visitors moved around our tables, they drew on a printed sheet a heart around the books they wanted to “date”, and at the end gave their sheet to Yasmeen, who arranged for them to borrow their favourites.  It was great fun and an entertaining way to recommend books to each other!  (Leonie Baptist and Hannah Wood, S2)

There is currently a display in the Library of the books listed above and others of similar appeal.  You can click on the photo above to see more photos from the event.

Young Musicians at Eden Court – On Sat 8th March members of the Highland Youth Orchestras and Bands took part in another series of concerts in Eden Court.  Nessie Gearing (S6) is a member of the Highland Schools Wind Band. Megan Copland (S3) and Eilidh Owens (S5) are members of Còisir G.  Oscar Howard (S5) is in the Highland Youth Big Band.  Leonie Baptist (S2) and Hannah Wood (S2) are members of the Highland Youth String Orchestra.  Becky Griggs (S6) and Luke Gorman (S6) are in SNAS. Nessie Gearing and Freya Baptist (S4) are in the Highland Regional Youth Orchestra.  The event was tinged with regret for some of the pupils.  Becky, Nessie and Luke leave school shortly so this was their last performance in these events.  Fortunately they will have many treasured memories and experiences.  Read more here and see photos by clicking here.

S2/3 Highland Small Schools’ Football Tournament – The S2/3 Gairloch team travelled to Drumnadrochit on the 28th of February accompanied by Mr Cumming and Andy Bowker. Gairloch dominated their semi-final against Mallaig but unfortunately lost the game 1-0. In the third-place play off, the team beat Ardnamurchan 3-1 with goals from David MacGregor (2) and Lewis Campbell.

Àrd-Ìre Ghàidhlig / Higher GaelicBu toigh leinn taing a thoirt do Cathaidh NicLeòid, Iseabail NicCoinnich, Marion Nic an Tàilleir agus Peadar MacDhòmhnaill a thadhail air a’ chlas againn anns na seachdainean mu dheireadh. Bha e glè inntinneach a bhith a’ còmhradh riutha agus a bhith a’ faighinn barrachd a-mach mu dhualchainntean na Gàidhlig.

We would like to thank Cathy MacLeod, Isobel MacKenzie, Marion Taylor and Peter MacDonald for visiting our class during the last few weeks. It was very interesting to speak to them and to learn more about different Gaelic dialects.

Dancing Day – On the 5th of March pupils from S3 – S6 took part in a dance workshop. Y-dance is a Glasgow based organisation that travels all over Scotland teaching pupils the basics of dance. During the day we were taught two dance routines incorporating street dance and musical theatre. The instructors encouraged us to step out of our comfort zone and be creative. We worked in teams and choreographed our own routines, using the moves that they had shown us.  At the end of the day we performed our routines to a selection of teachers, who thoroughly enjoyed it. This day has built up our confidence and has prompted us to start a lunchtime club for anyone who wishes to continue developing their ability. Thanks to Y-dance for the inspiration they provided.  (Beth Townsend and Holly Morrison)

Basketball result – The senior boys played Fortrose Academy Wednesday 12th March. Fortrose are the current league leaders and have an exceptionally talented team, with five Scotland squad or national league players in their team (we have one). The first quarter was worrying; we were down 23 – 4 and it looked like the rest of the game was going to feel like a very long time. The second quarter saw our team defending much more effectively, driving for the basket and rebounding well at both ends. The pressure paid off and we came back to within four points of our opponents. The rest of the game produced some outstanding, disciplined play from both teams but we weren’t able to overcome our first quarter deficit and we eventually lost 84 – 62. Despite the final result, everyone there felt it was a great game to watch. Thanks to Neil MacLeod and Brian Whall for helping Mr Milner referee.

We have finished in the middle of the Highland Schools’ League, with Fortrose and Alness above us, Charleston, and Invergordon below – pretty good for, by far, the smallest school in the competition.

5×50 Challenge – Gairloch High has entered this year’s 5×50 challenge. The challenge is to run, walk and cycle, jog or swim for 5km every day for 50 days. You can do it as part of a team of two or three or by yourself. Exercise classes at the leisure centre or swimming pool would count, so if you take part in spinning, body balance or futsal that could be your 5k that day every week. You could even hire a court and play an hour of badminton or short tennis. The challenge will start on the 30th March until the 18th May. The sponsor money raised will go towards the renovation of the school’s building at Slattadale, which we hope can be used as an outdoor learning centre for future years.

gairloch5x50

The pupils in the Activity Tourism course are organising the school team for this event and we are very pleased that over 100 pupils have signed up already. We hope that parents will join in with the challenge and support their children by encouraging them and sponsoring their efforts to complete their 5km each day. More information can be found at www.5×50.org or on Facebook here We also have our own Facebook 5×50 page here.(Chris Young, Luke Gorman, Neil MacKenzie and Jake MacDonald)

Beach Clean – This is now the eleventh year that Gairloch High School pupils have cleaned the beach between Strath and The Myrtle Bank Hotel.  They managed to collect over 50 sacks of rubbish in the first clean up.  This year, the beach was covered in more rubbish than in any year since that first one.  S5/6 Outdoor Education pupils spent some time on Wednesday morning and S1 SMART pupils spent Wednesday afternoon cleaning the beach as far as the pumping station.  They have made a brilliant job!  We plan to clean the section from the pumping station to the river on Wednesday afternoon and welcome any support from the community – gloves and sacks can be provided!

Click on the photo to see more images.  S1 pupils were also out in January cleaning the beach below the graveyard.  Click for photos.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – Former pupil Mags Mathieson has just achieved her silver award. Nikki Goldby, S4, has achieved Bronze. Well-done girls!

One Red Nose – On 21st March, GHS Drama Club performed a collection of short scripted and devised scenes. We chose plays which were happy and others which were a bit sad, to show both sides of Comic/Sports Relief. Helen Peat, our wonderful drama teacher, found 3 comedy plays and we wrote 3 serious plays ourselves. The plays were: “The Audition”, “The Waiting Room”, “A Day in the Life”, “Cube Farming”, “Casual-ty” and “Ever Decreasing Circles”. Maia Mackenzie also performed two songs, “Your Song” by Elton John and “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men. We managed to raise £152, which we will donate to Sports Relief. Now we have quite a few more people coming to our weekly drama group, which is great because we can perform bigger plays!

We would like to thank Andy Bowker, the office and cleaning staff, Ms Hunter, Ms Thistlethwaite and her INT 2 Hospitality class for the interval refreshments, our parents and everyone who has supported us. Caitlin Mitchell and Hannah Wood (on behalf of the GHS Drama Club)

Sport Relief – On 20th March pupils organised a one-mile walk around the school at lunchtime. Staff and pupils raised £115.48. Carys Townsend and Eilidh MacDonald also raised £100 by selling squares on a prize draw. Well done to all!

Art Exhibition – The S2 Self Portrait Exhibition is running until April 2nd in the GALE Centre. See if you can recognise our S2 pupils from their portraits by visiting the show!

Donation of Outdoor Equipment and Clothing – We recently received a donation of equipment from Mrs Joan Smith, Derby. Her husband died recently and she has kindly passed on a selection of protective clothing and rucksacks. Through their daughter, Mrs Hilary Crick, Beauly, they had heard of our Outdoor Activities and we have been fortunate enough to be gifted the equipment to support the activities of the pupils. Thank you!

Pupil Success – Alasdair MacDonald recently took part in the Inverness Music Festival. Alasdair received a first place with Distinction in Advanced Accordion. In the Open Competition he came second with an Outstanding. Well-done Alasdair!

Malawi Presentation – Recently S5 pupils, Beth Townsend and Sofie Banister were invited to an evening with the Dingwall Rotary at the Tulloch Castle Hotel. The evening was designed to give members and guests of the Rotary an update on our trip last October. The Rotary kindly donated money to assist our Partnership with Mlozi. Beth and I gave a presentation assisted by Mr Port and accompanied by a selection of photographs and videos. Everything went very well and our Malawian tales were gratefully received. (Sofie)

S1 Bring and Buy – With additional funds collected the S1 pupils finally raised just over £2000 at their Bring and Buy. The pupils would like to thank the following local businesses for their support: Inverewe Garden, Paul Tattersall, Gairloch Trekking Centre, Button Bothy, The Shieling, Shieldaig Bar & Coastal Kitchen, Loch Torridon Smokehouse, Landmark, Kenneth Morrison’s Butchers, Isle of Ewe Smokehouse, Beautopia, Aultbea Stores, Cornerstone, Dentist, Gairloch Pantry, Kenny Tallach (Argocat), Aultbea Hotel, Myrtle Bank Hotel, Eddie Ritchie, Torridon Sea Tours, Bridge Cafe, Ewe Canoe, Poolewe Shop.  Click here for some photos.

Judo demonstration – For the last three years, during P.E. lessons, Mr Hulme has been giving pupils five-week taster sessions to learn a little about judo. As he has not had another person with knowledge of the sport to work with, this has limited the range of judo that could be demonstrated. For this reason, Mr Hulme arranged with Mr N. Shepherd, a fellow member of Invergordon Judo Club, to give a demonstration of the various techniques that make up the sport. In front of the whole school, the two ‘judoka’ displayed throws, hold-downs, strangles and arm-locks. The pupils particularly enjoyed seeing Mr Hulme strangled! The session concluded with a brief bout of contest fighting and the opportunity for questions. It is hoped that some pupils will have been intrigued by what they saw and take up the sport should the opportunity arise in the future.

Lord of the Flies Dance Workshop – On the 20th March, 28 boys from S1- S6 took part in a thoroughly enjoyable dance workshop. The company ‘New Adventures’ are offering dance workshops as part of a nationwide project to inspire, uncover and nurture existing talent while challenging stereotypes and breaking down barriers to male participation in dance. The tutors were very impressed with the boys’ efforts, and they have all been invited to a further audition if they wish the opportunity to perform alongside professional dancers at Eden Court Theatre in an adaption of William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’. Auditions will take place in Inverness all day on 12th April with call-backs for a second day on 13th April. For further information, contact Nat McCleary on 07837433196

50 Days to Fit – By the time you read this, the 5×50 Challenge will be underway. We hope that the 138 members of the GHS team are enjoying their more active lifestyle and are contributing lots of kilometres to the team total. The Activity Tourism class just have a few reminders for you all: remember to get friends and family to sponsor you in your efforts; remember to log your activity every day and post comments and pictures to https://www.facebook.com/GairlochHigh5x50; and lastly, remember the prizes – greatest distance, most sponsorship raised and most innovative 5K!

Important Dates – Available on the school website. School re-opens after Easter on Tuesday 22nd April. We are only back 4 days before the final exams begin! Study club has been arranged for S4 -6 pupils from Monday to Wednesday 7th-9th April.

Higher Physics trip to meet NOBEL Prize Winner – On Tuesday 22nd April a group of students from Higher Physics accompanied Mrs MacRae on an amazing visit to Plockton High school in order to attend a lecture given by Professor Peter Higgs and fellow particle physicists regarding the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle.

This experience was a unique chance to be told first hand the story of the Higgs boson, the lead up to its discovery and how this was achieved.  All who attended greatly enjoyed themselves and were incredibly grateful for the opportunity to listen to a man that is perhaps one of the greatest physicists of the modern world. (Sofie Banister, Eilidh Owens and Siobhan Vickerstaff)

Comenius Trip to Poland – During the week beginning 24th March, pupils and staff travelled to Poland, as part of the Comenius Project based on “The 4 Natural Elements and the Effect on our Lives”.  Staff travelling were Ms. Hunter and Mrs. Somers.  Pupils were Nessie Gearing, Kalvin Fraser, Freya Baptist and Ciaran Alexander.  They travelled to the town of Mszana, about 25 miles from Krakow, and pupils stayed with fantastic, welcoming host families.  The whole week was a great success, and apart from attending some lessons in school, pupils enjoyed a trip (800 steps down!) into the amazing Salt Mine, as well as a relaxing swim in a Geo-thermal pool, a ski lift up the mountain and a balloon ride in Krakow.  No-one can accuse the Comenius trips of being boring!  Of historical interest was also a visit to the Jewish quarter in Krakow, much of which is still under renovation from its devastation during World War II.

Staff and pupils plan on sharing their experiences at a special Comenius Evening on Tuesday June 17th, 7.30 p.m. where they will present photos, films, and displays of artefacts, as well as providing suitable refreshments.  During this evening, we will combine displays and presentations from Poland, as well as Portugal; this trip took place in January.

Pupils and staff are soon to visit Greece (week beginning 12th May).  Future visits are Turkey (September), Finland (December) and Spain (February 2015).

When all our partners visit us next April, we will have something to live up to, as all our visits so far have been packed with wonderful experiences.

Basketball result – The senior boys played their last game of the season against Invergordon Academy on Tuesday 22nd April. Invergordon are a good team, have been working hard in training and came to us fired up from a win against Alness Academy. We expected a tough game and got it; there were no more than four points separating the two teams throughout the first half. We knew that Invergordon were good at the fast break so we smothered their big rebounder and guards. Strong, organised defence and continuous pressure in offence saw the game turn in our favour and we came away 53- 32 winners at the buzzer. This was Ross Wotherspoon’s last game for us. He has been a stalwart in the school team since we started the basketball project three years ago. We will miss his physical presence in the key and 100% effort in every game. Keep playing, Ross!

This has been another successful season; we are by far the smallest school taking part in Highland competitions but have came away with five wins out of eight games. Things are looking really good for the future.

Y Dance Leadership Course – Sohpie Davies, Annie Maclennan, Leonie Baptist and Hannah Wood were selected to attend a Y Dance week. Hannah and Leonie reported the following: We had an amazing time at the Y Dance course.  We spent 5 days learning how to be a dance leader.  We learned many different styles of dance over the first few days including African, Jump Style and Musical Theatre – we even made up our own dance!

On the last few days we had our assessments.  First we had to pretend to teach a younger ones class.  Then we had to teach older ones – that was a bit harder!  We all passed our assessments and we had a party to celebrate!

We will be able to use our new qualification to teach others dancing.  Hopefully it will become useful in the future.

Skiff Colour Scheme Winners – In case you missed it in last edition S2 pupils Christopher Adam, Iain Nelson, Carla Watson and Sorley Street won the competition in school to choose colours for the Gairloch skiff. They will each be given a year’s free membership to Rowing Club. The Team coincidently picked colours tying in with school colours – white with green and blue trim with orange lettering for the name of the skiff. Well done to all of S2 for taking this competition very seriously!

S2 are now working on designs for new ‘C for Craic’ CD cover.

Pupil Success Lexanne Stewart (S1) wrote a short story and entered the Achnasheen and Garve News & Views Writing Competition. Lexanne won the section aimed at secondary aged young people. Well done to Lexanne and we hope to publish her story on the school website shortly.

Sean Quinn, S2, has been selected at audition to take part in an Eden Court production of Lord of the Flies performed as a musical. More info on this nearer the time. Sean is currently in rehearsal for performances at the end of May. Well done!

Carla MacLean (S5) was nominated to represent the school as a Commonwealth batonbearer. Carla will take part in the Queen’s Baton Relay as part of the build up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. More information on this once we know exactly when and where Carla will be taking part.

S4, S5 & S6 pupils are now sitting their SQA exams. We wish them all the best of luck in the national exams.

HeartStart Aultbea  – The school is grateful to this organisation for its support in providing training to pupils in basic life-saving skills. S1 were given a three-hour session and S2, having done the full session last year, were given a two-hour refresher course. This supports the defibrillator that HeartStart provided to the school last year and, being located in the Leisure Centre, is available for public use. We are grateful to Bobby Mitchell for organising the event and to trainers Phil MacLachlin and Hazel Lynch.

S1 Anti-Bullying Day – On Thursday 1st May all of S1 took part in an Anti-Bullying Day.  The purpose of the day was to make each pupil aware of their rights and responsibilities, their potential role in different bullying scenarios and ways to handle these situations.

The day involved watching short video clips, discussing different forms of bullying and what would be a good way of handling these and making posters and bunting.

Well done to Hannah Warren, Kai Pickering and Emily Morrison who made the best poster and to Morven MacLean for the best bunting, as voted by the rest of the year group.

Mentoring younger pupils – Pupils about to enter S6 after the summer will have the opportunity to become Prefects and Mentors. This supports younger pupils and staff across the school. This extra responsibility helps us develop senior pupils’ sense of citizenship and prepares them for adult life beyond school. As part of this process S5 pupils are reminded that they should have Mentor Applications handed in to school, in writing, by the end of May.

S3 Bronze DofE Expedition Training Day – Here is a quick summing up of the training day in Flowerdale according to some of the pupils involved: “On Wednesday we hiked up past the waterfall in Flowerdale to a ruin where we set up tents and practised using our stoves. We had lots of fun and it was a great experience and we even beat the teachers back to the bus!” The pupils involved will be putting the skills learned at Flowerdale into practice on Monday, 26th of May when they head to the Cairngorms for their first expedition.

S2 History trip to the Iron Works at Poolewe – On Tuesday morning 6th May class 2A set off to Poolewe on a History trip. Their aim: to try to locate the remains of the iron ore works, which were once such an important feature of Poolewe. The idea arose out of the Comenius Project – ‘The Four Elements’. It proved fascinating for the pupils to discover that the two elements of water and fire were so clearly in evidence here just on their doorstep and they enjoyed their Internet research and working on their PowerPoint presentations. They will now be able to finish these with the help of their maps, diagrams and photos with a view to showing them off when our Comenius partners come to Scotland next year. The weather conditions were ideal: no rain, some sun and a pleasant breeze – what a great way to spend an hour! Accompanying the pupils were Mrs Fraser, Ms Dean and Mrs Somers.

Slattadale - For a long time now we have not been in a position to make full use of the building at Slattadale, but now we have longer blocks of teaching time on our timetable with some classes, so we have a much better opportunity to take pupils in the minibus and travel the 8 miles to this wonderful facility and location. No matter what the subject, we believe the potential for Slattadale to assist with outdoor learning is unique and we hope you agree. The existing lease came to an end on 31st January this year. GHS decided to renew the lease, but there is a one-off legal cost of over £1000 for this privilege!

Out, damned spot!

S3 Enterprise Day 2

The adjacent building (with dilapidated roof) was earmarked for demolition due to its dangerous condition, but we have managed to persuade Forestry Commission not to do this, but rather to give us 2 years to complete all the work. The extension is roughly 18 metres by 6 metres and will make a fantastic working area, for all sorts of events, but it needs a new roof.

To re-roof the “extension”, to a specification to be approved by Forestry Commission, we need to use a competent contractor and they need to take full responsibility for effective health and safety management.

A reputable, local building contractor has given us a quote of £8000 to put up a pitched roof, in line with the main building, and all associated costs with raising the gable end and gutters etc.

Our Associated Primary Schools and other community groups could also use the building by arrangement. There are two classrooms, a small kitchen and two toilets. There is currently no running water, but it should be possible to connect a supply.

So our plea is to that you look at our Facebook page entitled Slattadale, LIKE it, and perhaps make a donation when we get an account setup! The pupils are currently undertaking the 5×50 challenge and the intention is that money raised will go towards Slattadale.

The next event to raise funds for this project will be a sponsored walk on June 12th following the Tollaidh path starting at the Poolewe end. Our pupils and staff will finish at Slattadale and then see what needs to be done to bring this resource up to scratch. Feel free to join us. More details nearer the time.

S1 Cairngorms Week & Comenius in Greece – By the time you read this S1 will have been away for their residential week in the Cairngorms. We also have three S2 girls visiting Greece. Check out the website for photos of their activities and read about the trips in the next issue.

Gairloch High School now on Facebook – the school has now got a page to flag up news items and other details posted on the school website. The website will remain the main focus but those who use Facebook regularly can keep up to date. Search for Gairloch High School or click here and LIKE us!

Junior Maths Challenge – A few weeks ago S1 and S2 took part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge.  Well done to Iain Nelson who got “Best in School” and a silver certificate and to Gregor Vickerstaff who also got a silver certificate.  The following pupils all got bronze certificates: – Leonie Baptist, Eilidh MacDonald, Connor Forbes, Hannah Wood, Carys Townsend and Scarlet Pickering who was also best in S1.  Well done to everyone who took part.

S1 Cairngorm Trip – S1 returned recently from the S1 residential previously known as Nethybridge. Based in the very well appointed Kincraig Christian Centre, S1 pupils and several staff had an exciting week of activities that included mountain biking, rock climbing, mountain and forest walking expeditions, orienteering and evening games. We are grateful to all the staff whose additional skills and qualifications make this event possible every year but particularly to Dr Caley who makes sure everything is organised in advance and goes to plan throughout the week. There are lots of photos on the website similar to the one above which shows S1 pupils at Loch Morlich after an evening barbeque and water sports.  Click on the photo below to access lots more images on the school website.

First Aid – Pupils in S3 undertook a one-day First Aid course with Mr Cory Jones of Outdoor First Aid. For those involved with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, this provided training for their forthcoming expedition. For all, it provided them with the ability to cope with emergencies, extending the work done previously with on basic life-saving first aid. We thank Mr Jones for running this course again.

‘The Apprentice’ – S3 pupils were involved in an event similar to the BBC programme ‘The Apprentice’. They spent two days working in teams to design a household item valued under £100. Their products were then presented to the rest of the school. Pupils had opportunity to quiz the groups on the merits of their products. A panel of teachers judged the items deciding on the one that they would most likely invest in. The winning team came up with a sophisticated chopping board. Though not in the winning team, Alasdair MacDonald was judged the best team leader.

Plockton v Gairloch S1-S3 Football – In 1991-92 the Gairloch-Plockton football trophy disappeared. Recently found in Plockton, staff felt that the annual fixture should be re-instated. The Gairloch boys won convincingly the second match 6-0 on Friday 23rd May and were presented the trophy by Mr Port. Thanks to Mr Cumming for his work with the team and our hope is that with continued victories, the trophy will remain in Gairloch for many years to come!  Read more here and see some photos of the successful team.

S3 Cake Bake Competition – On the same week as ‘The Apprentice’, Mrs Johnston organised a baking competition for S3. Much fun appeared to have been had and you can see photos of the cakes on the school website. The staff judged the results. Much cake was eaten!  Click on the photo below to see more images.

Bake-off 15th May

Lord of the Flies – On Thursday 29th May a coach of staff and pupils travelled through to Eden Court to see S2 pupil, Sean Quinn take part in the musical adaption of Lord of the Flies. Sean is working alongside other young people but training with professional dancers.

Cinders in German – On Thursday and Friday 8th and 9th May it was pantomime season at the High School as the S2 German class performed their very own version of Cinderella, written all by themselves – in German, of course! Starring Leonie Baptist as Aschenputtel (that’s Cinders to you and me!), Gregor Vickerstaff and Lewis Brady as the Ugly Sisters as you’ve never seen them before, and Caitlin Mitchell as a rather glamorous Wicked Stepmother, along with some great support acts and Roddy MacRae as a Very Useful Person, this was a performance not to be missed. If you were unlucky though, there are two video versions: the ‘silent’ one, performed in rather trying conditions with an exam in an adjacent room, and the ‘noisy’ version complete with boos, hisses and the occasional wolf whistle. Seriously though, it was greatly enjoyed, even by those who claimed they couldn’t understand a word and it was a wonderful way for S2 to finish their German course.DSC_0006

Primary 7 pupils visit High School – Primary 7 pupils from our associated Primary Schools visited for 2 Icebreaker Days. On Thursday 22nd May the pupils had a familiarisation event followed by some science work. On Friday 23rd May they had sessions in Art, Music and PE. Three of the older pupils trained recently on the YDance Leadership week put their new skills to work during the PE session. Annie Maclennan, Leonie Baptist and Hannah Wood organised and led a dance session with the assistance of Mrs Hildrey.

In June P7 pupils will return for two days of normal timetabled classes in further preparation for August.

Community Flower Displays – The Rural Skills group have now planted up the 20 Community tubs around the village with a mixture of 12 annual plants. Last stop was Strath Square where Neil Brady kindly gave the boys a well-deserved cup of tea and biscuits. The plants were ordered on line before Easter and the boys have lovingly grown them on to a stage where they are large enough to take their chances. We will continue to feed the tubs and hope they are a success.

Comenius Trip to Greece – As half of our 2 year Comenius project draws to a close, pupils and staff headed off in May to sunny Greece.  Pupils involved were Leonie Baptist, Hannah Wood and Eilidh MacDonald.  Staff accompanying them were Ms. Hunter and Ms. Velt.  After a lovely day sightseeing in Athens, they travelled north to the seaport of Volos, where our fellow Comenius school is situated.  All the other countries’ pupils and staff were reunited – from Finland, Poland, Portugal, Latvia, Turkey and Spain.  The lovely weather was obviously a bonus, but the excursions and activities were all very interesting and informative.  They visited a mediaeval town overlooking Volos, as well as climbing high up into the mountains (by bus!) to visit the monasteries perched precariously at the top of the peaks.  Ancient Greek archaeology was explored in their visit to the local museum, where pupils were given the chance to make little replica Greek urns.  Our pupils were welcomed by amazing host families, and they were able to experience Greek home life, as well as the wonderful Greek food on offer.  On the way back to Scotland, they again spent the day and another night in Athens, visiting the famous Acropolis and Parthenon, as well as the new Acropolis Museum, designed to “float” over ancient archaeology discovered beneath the ground. A wonderful week was had by all; the next trip is in September to Turkey.

Comenius Evening – This takes place on Tuesday 17th June, in the multipurpose hall, at 7pm.  This is the community’s chance to see presentations from our visits to Portugal, Poland and Greece.  Refreshments, themed from these countries, will be available, as well as displays of our souvenirs from each of the countries.  We are also holding a raffle (for which donations would be most gratefully received!) as we have to do a lot of fundraising to ensure that as many children as possible can go on the trips next year.  Your attendance at the evening will be most welcome!

Gairloch v Plockton 2014 – As reported in last issue the second leg of the MacPherson Cup was held in Gairloch on Friday the 23rd of May.  Click here for the full report.

Gairloch v Plockton 2014

The football team is in need of a new set of strips. We hope to take part in the Highland Small Schools’ tournament as well as playing some friendlies next session. It may be that a local business would like to sponsor the team. This would enable us to purchase a new set of strips. Please contact the school if you can help us.

Staff Retirement – Our Active School Coordinator (ASC) Dr John Shearer has retired. Since taking over as ASC John has run the lunchtime inter-house activities, transported pupils to events and helped fund and organise some coaching courses.

John is also responsible for getting basketball started in the primary schools, which has led to some of our pupils having the opportunity to play at the highest level including National.

John has worked at the school on and off for many years as a Maths teacher, supply cover and even Home Economics!   When we lost our last HE teacher, he developed a Lifeskills course that included welding and eventually some cooking!

As ASC he has made a valuable contribution in supporting transition for the P7 pupils over the last few years. It goes beyond this though and last week’s ASG Sports Event on the field was indicative of his hard work. It was a great event blessed by lovely weather. Staff recognised John’s effort with a presentation and we all wish him well for the future.

Primary 7 visit – The Primary 7 pupils completed the second of their transition visits to the High School on the 6th June.  For two days they followed the timetable that they will become familiar with after the summer. Pupils were also presented with their Gairloch High School ties.
